How SeniorHealthCompanion is different
When we started, I didn’t know that other apps like this already existed. Here is what makes SeniorHealthCompanion different.
Designed for seniors. The app has three text sizes. Even the smallest is larger than in many apps we tried, and the large size works well on tablets. We aimed for high-contrast colors and buttons larger than many apps have, and we worked to make it easy to find your way around.
Your data stays on your device. Your health records are stored on your phone or tablet, not on our servers. Some apps keep your data on their servers, so you need to know where it is and who can access it. With SeniorHealthCompanion, your health records leave your device only when you choose: when you sync with your spouse or a caregiver, when you export a PDF to print or email, or when you save a backup file. When you sync, the data is encrypted on your phone first, and the temporary copy is deleted automatically within 24 hours. We have no copy of your backup, so save one somewhere you can reach if something happens to your phone. You don’t want to lose your records.
Ready when the power is out. We live on the Texas Gulf Coast, and hurricanes have left us without power, and without cell service, for up to 12 days. Without service, the internet doesn’t work. But if your phone has battery, your records are still there, because they’re on the phone.
Why it’s free. There are four basic ways apps make money: selling the app or charging a subscription, in-app purchases to unlock features, advertising, or making everything free and earning money from user data. These can be mixed in many ways. SeniorHealthCompanion is free to download and use, supported by a small banner ad served by Google AdMob. The ad network uses a standard device advertising identifier, but we do not share your health data with it or with any advertiser. We can’t read your health information, so we can’t sell it. Our intent is to keep the app free for everyone, so cost never stops someone on a fixed income from using it. There are many ways to run ads, and we tried to make ours as unobtrusive as possible.
SeniorHealthCompanion is a record-keeping tool. It doesn’t give medical advice. In an emergency, call 911.
